Everett Shinn, born on November 6, 1876, in Woodstown, New Jersey, emerged as a pivotal figure in American art, renowned for his vivid urban scenes and theatrical settings. At 15, he enrolled at the Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia to study mechanical drawing, a decision that marked the beginning of his formal education in art. The following year, he took classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he honed his skills further and embarked on a career as a staff artist for the Philadelphia Press by age 17.
In 1897, Shinn moved to New York City, a move that would significantly shape his career and artistic style. In New York, he quickly established himself as a talented urban realist, chronicling the energy and class divisions of the city through his work. His marriage to Florence "Flossie" Scovel in 1898 and subsequent marriages reflected a tumultuous personal life that often found its way into tabloid rumors.
